Ski Trip

It was Monday the 15th of August, the day Ruma Tahi was going skiing at Porter Heights. I woke up at 5 am so I had more than enough time to get ready. I quietly got up so I didn't wake up my baby sister who  was sound asleep and probably would  of stayed  that way for another 2 hours. I got all my things ready and left. I stepped out into the cold morning air and shivered. When I walked into the class all I saw was excited smiling face.

“Shot gun the side” I said to everyone, so I got the  most room. We loaded the car and set off. The first half of the ride all we did was chat. “We should play a game” said Lakshitha. We all agreed to play truth or dare. When it got to my turn I dared Matthew to stick his head out the window and sing jingle bells. I later regretted that, because as soon as he opened the window the car filled with cold air but we didn't mind that much, because we were laughing at funny his hair looked.

When we arrived at the porters sign we were making jokes about our driver just driving straight instead of turning at the corners. Even though I was a little scared I laughed anyway. We were slowly getting further up the mountain and the closer we got the more excited I  became. We finally arrived at Porters Height, I was full of excitement and joy I couldn't wait to get skiing. The only thing in my way was getting my skis and boots.

We walked over to the area where you get you boots and skis. The porters instructor put us into groups based on our level of experience. I was in the intermediate group along with my friend madison. We waited a long time to get our skis, because there was already a school there so we couldn't go in until there was room in the building. I got my boots put one on so the other could be fitted on my skis. I put on my other boot picked up my skis at that point  I realised that the boot I was wearing were heavier than I thought.

When I got to the beginners slope I slowly went down the slope. I realised that I had forgotten how to turn  but after a few goes down the slope I kind of got the jist of it.  A while later I knew how to stop and turn so Ms Kemp told me the password to get onto the intermediate slope. I was a little nervous, because I had never been on the intermediate slope, so I only went halfway up. My first two runs going down were fine nothing bad happened but on my third try I kind of fell off the poma(AT THE VERY START). Even though I fell over I got back and kept going. All though I didn't go back up the intermediate slope I had fun racing my friends down the beginners slope with my friends.

Near the end of the day Summer and I went over to the hill covered in snow where Fern and tara were, because we saw them climbing it earlier and it looked fun so we wanted to try. Summer and I found a way which made it easier to climb up. I went first up and would kick little hole into the snow then summer would come up behind me and dig them out with her hands, so when we fell and had to climb back up it there were hole that you could put you feet in. The only bad thing about climbing up that hill was when we fell we went over all the bumps and it hurt our bums.
We only had 6 minutes left to ski so Summer, Courtney, Niamh and I had fun racing down the slope while trying to do tricks. I never fell but when summer was on the magic carpet she fell and so did Niamh. They were both trying to get back up but couldn't I was laughing so hard  and was to far up to help them so the guy who controlled the carpet d too stop it so they could get back. When he stopped the magic carpet I nearly fell over, Because I wasn't expecting it.

Then it was time to leave we walked over to the area where you get your skis and boot so I could return them. As soon as I took my boots off my feet felt so much better. I put my skis back so they could be clean then I closed my boots, put them on the bench and thanked the lady.

I jumped back in the car back in my same spot and waited until everyone else was ready. When everyone was back in the car we were off. The first game we played was buzz, we had to buzz on five. We played that for a while think I won twice, After we were bored of that game we played a game of 21. We only played two rounds of that I won one of them and lost the other. The next game we played was I spy I really liked that game because I was really good at it. No one wanted me to have a turn, because I did really hard ones like the ripped wrapper.

We finally arrived back at the school around six.  When Matthew finally let me out of the car I thought that my leg really hurt so I lifted up my pants and saw that I had a really bad bruise from my boots but skiing was worth it, because I had so much fun. I really wish that we could go skiing again later on in the year.

  1. Hi Emily, Its Mackenzie here.
I really liked this piece of writing you did on your trip to Porter Heights. It sounds like you had fun. I don't think you can improve on anything.
